CHAPTER 1: THE BEGINNING

Chapter 1

The Beginning

Our history is unfortunately obscured by the mists of antiquity. Very little is known of it because of the scarcity of ancient records. Our fragmentary knowledge of our past is the result of arduous research to patiently reconstruct our history from facts obtained from our existing ancestors.

We are virtually a race of races. According to the Philippine history, most of Ilokano traits and culture are patterned from Malays, specifically the second wave, who came in the Philippines between 100 A.D. and 1300.

Malayan colonization of the Philippines is a vague chapter in our history, owing to the scarcity of ancient records. A fragmentary account of it can be reproduced from the story of the purchase of Panay by the Bornean datus about the middle of the 13th century.

According to the story, ten Malay datus of Borneo, discontented under the tyrannical rule of Sultan Makatunaw, secretly left the island to seek new homes beyond the seas. They were Puti (the leader), Bangkaya, Dumangso, Paiburong, Sumakwel, Paduhinog, Lubay, Dumangsi, Dumalogdog and Balkasusa. They brought their families and warriors.

They settled in Panay until they purchase the island. Among the datus, seven of them remained there and colonized Panay. The three Datus – Puti, Dumangsil and Balkasusa sailed farther north, reaching Taal Lake. Datu Dumangsil and Balkasusa settled the region and founded colonies inLuzon. Descendants of these pioneer datus spread out over the areas in Luzon.

From the facts obtained, it is concluded that the PASTORES blood rooted to Datu Balkasusa who colonized the Northern Luzon and belonged to Christian Malays. Out of the interracial mixture, we are a product of the racial blending of the East and the West, with the Malayan strain predominating.
